Every sports teacher has seen it. A new set of jerseys arrives in June, the team looks brilliant at the first match, and by Diwali the numbers are cracking and the red has bled into the white. Sports uniforms take more abuse than almost any other garment: sweat, sun, mud, and washing after every session. At M10 Uniforms we’ve made PT and sports uniforms for more than 50 schools since 1998, along with kits for academies, clubs and corporate teams in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Dubai. This guide covers the choices that decide how long sports uniforms really last, from the fabric and printing method to sizing for growing children and teams that play in serious heat.
Why cotton is the wrong choice for most sports uniforms
Cotton is comfortable for a walk in the park. For a football match in May, it’s a mistake.
Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it, so a cotton jersey gets heavy, sticks to the body and takes ages to dry. Polyester performance knits do the opposite. They pull moisture away from the skin and let it evaporate, which keeps players cooler and lighter. Mesh panels under the arms and down the back help even more.
There’s one place cotton still makes sense: casual house T-shirts for school events, where nobody’s running a 400m. For anything competitive, choose a performance fabric. Your players will notice the difference in the second half, when a cotton shirt would be clinging and heavy and a performance jersey still feels light.
Sublimation, screen print or embroidery?
How the design goes onto the fabric matters as much as the fabric itself.
Sublimation
The design is dyed into the polyester, so it can’t crack or peel. It’s ideal for full-colour kits with patterns, sponsor logos and names, and it’s become the standard for most team sportswear uniforms.
Screen printing
Good for simple one or two-colour designs on large quantities. It’s cost-effective, but cheaper inks can crack after repeated washing.
Embroidery
Best for crests on tracksuit jackets, caps and polo shirts. It looks premium but adds weight and heat, so keep it off match jerseys.
Designing for heat in Mumbai and Dubai
Our two main climates ask a lot of a sports wear uniform. Mumbai brings humidity that never lets sweat dry. Dubai brings dry heat that can top 40°C during afternoon training, plus fierce sun that fades colours quickly.
Lighter colours reflect heat better, and a fabric with UV-resistant dyes holds its shade longer under strong sun. For outdoor academies, long-sleeve base layers or sun sleeves are worth considering. Why make a young cricketer field for three hours in direct sun with bare arms?
Sizing for growing children and mixed teams
School sports uniforms have to cover a huge size range, sometimes from age six to eighteen in one order. Children grow mid-year, so a little extra length in shorts and sleeves stretches a kit’s life.
For adult and corporate teams, offer both men’s and women’s cuts. A women’s jersey that’s simply a smaller men’s jersey fits badly and gets left in the kit bag. Before bulk production, it’s worth asking any supplier for:
- A size set so players can try kits on before ordering
- Fabric samples in the actual colours you’ve chosen
- A wash test on a printed sample
- A clear timeline for reorders when new players join
Caring for sports uniforms between matches
Good sports uniforms still need sensible care. Wash kits inside out in cold or warm water, skip fabric softener because it clogs the moisture-wicking fibres, and never tumble-dry sublimated jerseys on high heat. Drying in shade rather than direct sun also keeps colours bright for longer, which matters on a Mumbai terrace or a Dubai balcony alike.
Schools can print these instructions on a small label or care card. It’s a tiny cost, and it noticeably extends the life of every kit.
What to expect from good sports uniform suppliers
The best sports uniform suppliers make the kit themselves rather than sourcing it from whoever is cheapest that month. That’s the only way colours stay consistent across reorders and quality doesn’t change from season to season.
M10 Uniforms makes all its sports uniforms in its own factories in Bhilwara and Ludhiana, where around 150 machines produce 1,500 to 2,000 garments a day. We back every kit with a two-year, No Questions Asked replacement warranty covering stitching failure, cloth peeling and colour fastness. We make cricket, football, athletics and multi-sport kits, as well as PT uniforms, with orders starting at 50 pieces per category.
Whether you run a school in Navi Mumbai, a football academy in Andheri or a corporate cricket team in Dubai, tell us the sport, the number of players and your colours. We’ll send fabric options and a sample kit before production begins.
